I’m so excited to share the Snowflake Stitch Quilt with you today from the book Merry & Bright Modern Christmas Quilts! I was approached in early 2020 with this collaboration and this book is full of fun and modern patterns that are not only gorgeous for Christmas and Christmas gifts, but they are also quilts that look stunning in your home all year long.
Snowflake Stitch is written around yardage and uses strip piecing to make the assembly process quick and easy. This is definitely a pattern that is very beginner friendly or a great skill builder for strip piecing.
Snowflake Stitch is currently only available in the Merry & Bright Modern Christmas Quilts: For All Year Round Paperback, available on Amazon. However, it will be releasing as a standalone pattern from It’s Only Fabric and Thread in late 2022 with a few updates.
RILEY BLAKE SOLID FABRICS
I was lucky enough to work with Hollis Threads on this project who curated a gorgeous selection of Riley Blake solid fabrics for this project. All of the designers used colors from the same collection of solids to keep the book cohesive. This version of Snowflake Stitch used 4 Riley Blake Solids:
RUBY STAR SOCIETY SPECKLED FABRICS
In addition to the solids selected by Hollis Threads, we also decided to include some stunning Ruby Star Speckled Fabric by Rashida Coleman-Hale. I had been dying to use Speckled in a project so this was really exciting for me! We had a wide variety of Speckled colors to choose from, but the cream with gold metallic was perfect for this modern winter snowflake quilt! I also used Speckled for the backing and binding just to add that extra “WOW” factor. Specifically, I used Speckled in White Gold and Cloud.
FAST AND EASY QUILT PATTERN
Snowflake Stitch really is a fast and easy quilt to make. Once you get the strip piecing completed and then cut the blocks sew together really quickly. This is one of those quilts that I want to make up bundles in all sorts of color combinations!
LONG ARM QUILTING
Here’s a photo of Snowflake Stitch freshly quilted by Katie of Blue Door Quilting. I knew I wanted a fun snowflake and winter themed pantograph for E2E quilting. I sent her a few ideas and let her surprise me since I am always so indecisive when it comes to making a choice.
If you are having a hard time choosing a long arm quilting pantograph, I always recommend working with your quilter! They work on so many quilts and can recommend a design that will highlight or compliment your beautiful quilt.
There is nothing better than getting a quilt back from the long arm quilter! I still feel very spoiled when I do. I’ve been sending more of my quilts to a long armer over the past year since I have so many projects and pattern sin the works. It’s been one of the best things to outsource. I still love quilting myself but I enjoy it a lot more when I feel like I have the time to do it and I am not rushing.
SNOWFLAKE STITCH BACKING AND BINDING
I used Ruby Star Society Speckled in Cloud for both the backing and the binding on this quilt. Since this quilt was going to be photographed a certain way for the book, I decided to keep the back cohesive with the binding.
Typically I like to choose bindings that really pop and frame the quilt, so here it was lucky that the backing fabric I had picked was a great contrast to the White Gold Speckled I used on the front. Plus it tied into the gray cornerstones as well, which I loved!
I hope you love sewing up this modern snowflake quilt! Also be sure to checkout all the other amazing modern patterns in this book.
