IOFAT Creative Convos with Shari and Jennifer H. of Hollis Threads

I originally connected with Jennifer H. of Hollis Threads through on online pattern writing course. She then tested my second pattern, Gingham Rudolph, and offered a custom bundle for that quilt in her and her mother's online fabric via store. (And I am still absolutely smitten with the quilt she made!) Jennifer and her mother, Shari, started their online fabric store in October 2020 and have some big things planned for the future. Read more about Hollis Threads and their journey, along with some fun facts about Shari and Jennifer below. Also be sure to check out how you can connect with Hollis Threads at the bottom of the post.

Please explain your main creative area.

Hollis Threads is an online fabric shop. We currently carry fabric for making quilts.

Tell us about your business and what your favorite thing about your business is.

Hollis Threads is a mother and daughter team that started quilting out of boredom during the pandemic. We quickly fell in love with the craft and we are really enjoying learning all about quilting and different techniques and skills.

What has been your favorite make or creation so far?

It is hard to pick just one because each quilt taught us a new skill, or we mastered something like lining up points. Overall, Primrose is probably a front runner because we divided the quilt in half and each completed part of it and then joined them together. We enjoy being able to work together the most. We also learned a lot from this pattern, it was the first time we made a quilt that wasn’t just squares. We learned HSTs and Flying Geese.

What is one tip you'd recommend to someone just getting started in your creative area?

Don’t be scared of something new or of it not being perfect. Challenge yourself to learn something new and be proud of the finished product.

What are 3 words you'd use to describe your creative style?

    1.  Eclectic
    2.  Fun
    3.  Colorful

Do you have an upcoming make, launch, or project that you are excited about?

Hollis Threads is growing, and we are going to open a brick and mortar in 2022!! We will continue to sell fabric online and we hope to bring more education and opportunity to teach more people how to quilt.

What is one skill (either craft related or not) that you wish you knew how to do?

I really want to learn to crochet and knit.

What would your high school superlative be? (Most likely to...)

Procrastinate for the win! I really can push a deadline but some of my best work comes out when it is crunch time.

What's the oddest food you've ever tried and did you like it?

My mom and I are picky eaters. I am more likely to try a new food. The oddest food that I have tried would be grilled squid. The taste was good, but I didn’t enjoy the texture. It is definitely different from Calamari.

If you had to lose one of your five senses, which one would you give up and why?

If I had to give up one sense it would be smell, as long as it didn’t affect my taste. Of the five sense I think it is the one that I would miss the least.

Lastly, where can the readers connect with you and see more of your work?

Hollis Threads can be found on Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest @HollisThreads and you can shop on our website at www.HollisThreads.com.

IOFTA Creative Convos are bi-monthly short Q&A style blog posts that allow me, Katherine, to share other wonderful creatives and small business owners in not only the quilting space but in the creative fiber arts and textile space.

The goal is to provide a seat at the table for all types of small business creatives and to introduce my community to businesses that they may not have connected with yet.
