I love a good Valentine’s/Heart themed quilt pattern, so when Jordan Fabrics released a new free pattern a few weeks ago and my mind immediately saw how I could tweak it to make a fun and easy heart quilt that uses jelly roll strips (aka 2.5″ x WOF strips).

Essentially I took Donna’s Scrap Strips Diamond Trip and made the pattern as it is written but then I went back and added 2.5″ squares on about half of the pieces and oh my word this quilt was PERFECTION.

Jelly Roll Strip Quilt Pattern

I loved that this pattern used 2.5″ x WOF Jelly Roll strips. I had quite a few left over in red and pink from a previous project that would make such a fun scrappy version. I also had enough left over Ombre Fairy Dust strips in white from a prior project that I could use to make the hearts. I knew the white fabric would really pop from the red and pinks.

How to Modify the Free Pattern from Jordan Fabrics

To make this heart version of the Jordan Fabrics Scrap Strips Diamond Trip pattern you will need an additional 5 Jelly Roll strips that coordinate with  your main fabrics.

From these jelly roll strips, you will cut (80) 2.5″ squares. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on these squares. Set these aside and follow the pattern as it is written.

Once you lay out your quilt top, you will take the 10″ strips and sew them together in sets of two as shown below. Then you’ll add add (1) 2.5″ square to the upper right corner and sew along the diagonal line. Trim to a 1/4″ seam allowance and press.

I did this for all 16 sets and then placed them back where I had layed out my quilt top.

Next, you’ll take the 20″ strip sets in sets of two and sew them together. For (32) you will sew a 2.5″ square in the upper right corner and the lower left corner. For the remaining (32) you will sew a 2.5″ square in the lower right corner and the upper left corner.

See the below image for the 2.5″ square placement for both types.

Below is an example of how a row will look, once you’ve sewn on the 2.5″ squares and trimmed to 1/4″ seam allowance and pressed. You can also see how the top comes together as you complete the two row sections.

Since I decided to make a scrappy version, the red and pink 2.5″ squares blend in nicely to the main fabrics.

Quilting this Fun Heart Quilt

I decided that I wanted to try a quilting pattern on this heart quilt that I had seen but hadn’t tried yet. Using my Janome MC6650, I used the wavy line stitch to create a grid-like pattern. It turned out so fun! If you have the same machine, I really encourage you to play with this stitch. I have the setting is used pictured below.
Binding and finishing this Jelly Roll Heart Quilt

This quilt, to me, needed something extra fun so I decided to give rounded corners a try. (You can get a tutorial for how I did the rounded corners here.)

I think the rounded corners added a fun little element to this lovely and romantic heart quilt. Surprisingly it took me 4 days to complete this quilt:

Day 1: Cutting and sewing on all my white accent squares.

Day 2: Creating the hearts and assembling the quilt top.

Day 3: Basting abd quilting my wavy lines in one direction.

Day 4: Quilting my wavy lines in the opposite direction and trimming and binding the quilt.

Honestly I could have done it in 2 days, but I wasn’t in a rush ☺
