Or maybe this should be titled “The Quilt that made me fall in love with quilting?” Either way, let me paint a picture for you…
It was around Christmas 2019, I was at home with our two pups, re-watching Gossip girl for probably the 17th time, and I just got this feeling that I wanted to use the extra fabric that I had purchased in my attempt to make coffee cozies. I had purchased various fat quarters from both Hobby Lobby and Walmart in that adventure, to only make one and decide I didn’t need any more. So I set out cutting my remaining fabric (with scissors I might add) into 5″ by 5″ squares. I found a quick and easy tutorial that explained a 9 patch quilt block and how I could use this simple block to create an entire quilt. And honestly, I think I stayed up until probably 1 AM that night cutting fabric and beginning to sew!
The Finished Product
Honestly the quilt came together pretty quickly, especially since it was around the Christmas and New Year Holiday and I had some extra time off from work. I think in about two weeks I had everything sewn together and the quilt top finished. Not too bad for my first quilt!
I did a simple stitch in the ditch since it was my first time quilting and my seams weren’t exactly the best. I also used the a fun trick for my backing: a flat sheet. It was so much easier than trying to piece fabric for the back. Plus, I used store bought bias tape for the binding (which I absolutely hated, but that is for another day.)
I’d love to hear about your first quilt and what made you fall in love with quilting. Share your story below!
