Let’s talk fabric crumbs and strings! Do you keep them? Are they worth the hassle to you?

I used to not keep these smaller pieces that wouldn’t yield at least a 2.5” strip or 2.5” square. However, last year I challenged myself to use them in a project to see if it was worth the hassle of keeping and piecing them.

The result? I made a wonderfully scrappy #waywardwindsquilt! If you swipe ➡️ you can see some of my rainbow Crumb blocks before they became flying geese.

Piecing with crumbs and strings is great to use as leaders and enders but also if you just need some sewing that doesn’t take much thought! I keep them in my scrap bins and when I do my semi annual scrap cleanup I make some crumb fabric by color to be used in projects. It’s been a great way to stretch my stash and put less fabric in the trash.

Finally getting to appreciate the quilting on this Scrap Explosion Quilt! @quiltedelephantstudio used the Stacked Snails pantograph, which is the perfect not quite rainbows and not quite spirals pantograph for this very boxy block!

I have a tutorial a few reels back and on the blog if you want to make your own version of this block! It’s a great scrap buster 😊
